Scope and Contents

The Jewish Historical Society of San Diego Oral History Archive consists of interviews with members of San Diego's Jewish community concerning family and community history from the early 20th century to the present. The recorded interviews have been digitized from the original tapes and can be accessed in the Special Collections & University Archives reading room. In a few cases, transcriptions of interviews exist. A comprehensive spreadsheet with the full list of names, dates, topics and background of the speakers (including the names of JHSSD collections where more information may be found regarding the speaker) is available upon request.

Historical Note

This collection was created over thirty years (1991-2017) by Stanley Schwartz and other members of the JHSSD. It consists of recordings of speakers and panelists at JHSSD meetings and personal interviews by JHSSD members. Some people spoke about their lives and careers in San Diego, others spoke about their families and neighborhoods. Some spoke about institutions or organizations in the Jewish Community. There are also recordings from the 1980s by Ida Nasatir, who was well-known for her book reviews. Only a few of the people on these recordings are still living.
