Historical Note
When Brandeis University opened its first library in a converted horse stable in 1948, a group of women established the Brandeis National Women’s Committee (Brandeis Women) to raise funds to acquire books and fund library operations. That group, now known as the Brandeis National Committee (BNC), continues to thrive and support the university today. There are numerous chapters around the United States, including two in San Diego as of 2026. The Rancho Bernardo chapter was founded in 1977. Besides fundraising, the chapter provides educational opportunities on many topics with emphasis on literary and cultural themes.

Brandeis National Committee, Rancho Bernardo Chapter (founded 1977) donated this collection to the Jewish Historical Society of San Diego in 2022 (JHSSD #2022.03). Brandeis Rancho Bernardo treasurer Gerri Brech signed the paperwork.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The Jewish Historical Society of San Diego transferred this collection to Special Collections & University Archives in July 2026.
