Historical Note

Founded in the 1970s by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and others, the Jewish Renewal Movement is a trans-denominational approach to revitalizing Judaism. It combines the socially progressive values of egalitarianism, the joy of Hasidism, the informed do-it-yourself spirit of the havurah movement, and the accumulated wisdom of centuries of tradition. (see Aleph.org). Shir Ha Yam (Song of the Sea) Chavurah grew out of the Jewish Meditation Chavurah which affiliated with the national Jewish Renewal Movement in 1991. This collection was donated to the Jewish Historical Society of San Diego in 2025 by Ahouva Steinhaus (JHSSD #2026.01), one of the founders of Shir Ha Yam Chavurah (Song of the Sea Fellowship), a Jewish Renewal Chavurah.
