A large collection of letters, notes, memos & other items. Examples are: letters ( Dec. 1959-Jan. 1960) from Lemon Grove constituent Seth J. Carpenter, Congressman Wilson & William B. Macomber, Jr. (Asst. Secretary of State) re/ Mr. Carpenter's complaint about a department program in Bali, Indonesia called "Organization for the Recreation of the People of Bali;" letters (Dec. 1959-Jan. 1960) from San Diego constituent Miss Valerie Archibald, Congressman Wilson & William B. Macomber, Jr. (Asst. Secretary of State) re/ "inquires about the opportunities for a concert violinist to appear in foreign countries under the sponsorship of the Department of State;" letters (Dec. 1959-Feb, 1960) from constituent H.H. Fawcett, Jr. (Transit Advertising), Wilson, William B. Macomber, Jr. (State Dept.) & Arthur J. Wynne (Chairman, Canal Zone Committee for U.S. Retention of the Panama Canal) re/ Mr. Wynne's concern that the average U.S. taxpayer is unaware of the real story on the Panama situation and the "oligarchy" that the U.S. is supporting; letters (Oct. 1959-Jan. 1960) from Vic Whitaker & Dave Hellyer (The San Diego Union), Wilson & Robert D. Walsh (Congressional Liaison Officer, U.S.I.A.) re/ "interest in arranging for the San Diego Explorer Post 900 Indian dancing troupe to appear abroad;" letters (Jan. 1960) from El Cajon constituent A.R. Stedt, Wilson, William B. Macomber, Jr. & a copy of Dept. of State press release no. 828 (12/1/59) re/ a rejection of possible dept. assistance in "making it possible for the El Cajon Valley High School Band to go to the Soviet Union;" other topics of interest in this folder are: "Government policy on automobile lighting;" the Institute of Radio Engineers' interest in inviting Dr. Sergei V. Novakovsky (Chief of Research Group, Ministry of Communications, Moscow, U.S.S.R.) to participate in a program and seminary for the Institute; a friend of the Wilson family seeks State Dept. information regarding the President's Cultural Exchange Program. Could it be used for marionette shows? (two photos included in this small packet); constituent concerns about the Chinese Communist sentencing of Bishop Walsh; constituent seeks Wilson's assistance in trying to obtain tickets to Princess Margaret's wedding; several letters from constituents (1959-1960) regarding the novel The Ugly American and concerns that the State Dept. was not preparing staff sufficiently for duty overseas; constituent concern about the situation in the Belgian Congo; a request for information concerning the treaty signed with Russia at the end of World War II; constituent concerns about increase in anti-U.S. demonstrations abroad; a Chula Vista constituent's interest in corresponding with people in other countries; "staunch supporters of the Republican Party" speak out regarding American policy as to Cuba and Japan; a National City constituent's objection to the Panamanian flag being flown over the Panama Canal; thanks to Wilson from The San Diego Union for obtaining information from the State Department regarding "the world strength of communism;" letters from constituents (Mar.-Sept. 1960) re/ the deaths of three U.S. citizens in Baghdad, Iraq, on July 14, 1958; constituent complaint about the American Home exhibit in the UNESCO Village at Lake Hokone, Japan featuring "a public bar, serving alcoholic drinks at a price;" a La Jolla constituent's concerns about the Cuban situation; Grossmont constituent Ed Fletcher's frustration with the United Nations General Assembly & Imperial Beach constituent Doran W. Slater questions the State Dept. about there assistance to Patrice Lumumba.
