A large collection of letters, news clippings, postal cards, telegrams & other items. Examples are: letters (Aug.-Oct. 1961) from Coronado constituent Francis S. Jones, Congressman Wilson & Brooks Hays (Assist. Secretary of State) re/ Mr. Jones' concerns about the foreign service after reading The Ugly American; letters (Aug.-Oct. 1961) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Mary Ann Price, Congressman Wilson & Brooks Hays (Asst. Secretary of State) re/ Mrs. Price's concerns "that the United States and our allies are 'pumping money into Czechoslovakia;'" postal card and letters (Aug.-Oct. 1961) from Spring Valley constituent Chuck Taylor, Congressman Wilson & Brooks Hays (Asst. Secretary of State) re/ Mr. Taylor's alarm about a Dan Smoot Report indicating that the U.S. "are shipping machine tools and surplus agricultural commodities to the Soviet Union;" a number of letters and news clippings (May-Dec. 1961) from constituents, with Wilson and State Department responses, re/ airplanes being shipped to Yugoslavia; letters (Sept.-Oct. 1961) & news clipping from constituent Mrs. W.D. Carrier, Jr., Wilson & John S. Hoghland 2nd (Acting Asst. Secretary for Congressional Relations) re/ a question over Vietnam, handshaking and the clasped hands shield is answered by the Mr. Hoghland; letters (Aug.-Sept. 1961) from El Cajon constituent Roy V. Owen, Wilson and Brooks Hays (Asst. Secretary of State) re/ a State Dept response to Mr. Owen's "Why do we insist on sending political appointees to these various foreign countries as ambassadors." Other topics and issues presented to Wilson by his constituents in this folder are: State Dept. comments on the Awan High Dam; concerns about the lack of religious freedom in Spain; a large packet of material related to an "International Sanctuary" and other international peace concepts; politically conservative concerns about Dr. Robert Oppenheimer visiting "various Latin American countries under the OAS Professorship Program this summer;" Wilson's interest in a recent "reduction-inforce within the State Department" & a 3 page response from Roger Jones (Deputy Under Secretary of State); concerns about the arrest of Methodist missionaries in Angola by Portuguese authorities; a conservative criticism of the use of Alliance for Progress funds in Columbia; a false alarm about Finland and Soviet relations; responses to constituent concerns about U.S. assistance to Cuba & the Pan American Health Organization; and "the question of providing surplus agricultural products to Red China;" and a small packet of letters (Sept-Dec. 1961) re/ local Republican politics, a diary written aboard a the Sea King, an 85 ft. yacht, of a visit to Caribbean Islands & State Department information on the People-to-People Program.
