Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, post cards, a copy of the Dept. of Commerce, Accelerated Public Works Program Directory of Approved Projects, a notice and list for investigation, a map and a list of navigation projects. These are filed from Dec. to May. Examples are: letters (12/ 8, 13, 16 & 7/25) re/ opposition to the proposed Knowles Dam in Montana – Wilson opposed the project and the House “vetoed this measure . . . December 17 by a vote of 329 to 41;” letters and post card (12/8, 11/20, 14 & 9) re/ San Diego constituent J. W. Fitzgerald was concerned about the proposed Bridge Canyon Dam on the Colorado River and its potential threat to the Grand Canyon. Wilson sent him information from the Dept. of the Interior which indicated that the reservoir would go about 13 miles into the Grand Canyon National Park from the southwest; a letter (11/4) from Wilson to Col. Earl G. Peacock (District Engineer, Los Angeles, Corps of Engineers) and the Colonel’s reply re/ “Studies of the Silver Strand Bay Entrance,” the coast line between Zuniga Jetty and the Mexican Boundary as to beach-erosion and the San Luis Rey River; a 140 page copy of U. S. Dept. of Commerce/ Area Redevelopment Administration, September 1, 1963 Accelerated Public Works Program Directory of Approved Projects – “It lists 5,926 projects involving the expenditure of $685 million in Federal Accelerated Public Works funds;” a post card (7/29) from Coronado constituent Don Rush & Wilson reply (8/14) re/ opposition to the proposed Rampart Canyon Dam on the Yukon River – the project had been authorized for study by the Corps of Engineers, but the money had not been appropriated; a letter (4/5), a “Notice of Initiation of Investigation,” map of “Area Under Investigation” & a “Mailing List For Notice of Investigation San Luis Rey River Basin . . . Review Report On Survey For Water Resources Development” (4/8) re/ copies of information sent to Wilson from Col. Earl Peacock, District Engineer; letters (5/13 & 4/24) from Wilson & Lachlan M. Richards (Secretary pro Tem, California Navigation Conference) & attached 6 page copy of “California Small Craft Harbors Commission and Division Recommendations For Appropriations – Navigation Projects for Light-Draft Vessels in California U. S. Army Corps of Engineers – Civil Work Program Fiscal Year 1964” re/ Wilson was pleased to receive this material and indicated “a united front from our State when requesting Federal aid for both deep and shallow draft navigation projects;”
