Scope and Contents
A small collection of letters, telegrams, & memos. Examples are: Letters & telegrams (Oct.-Nov. 1956) from Congressman Wilson, RAdm. A.G. Mumma (Chief of the Bureau of Ships), & F.H. Watts (Pres., Southwest Iron & Steel Corp.) re/ “acute situation involving commercial marine facilities in the San Diego area” which had been encouraged to expand by the Navy; 2 letters (12/4 & 12/12/56) from F.H. Watts (Pres., Southwest Iron & Steel Corp.) to Congressman Wilson & to Chief of Bureau of Ships re/overhauling LCM’s & competition with Navy Repair Facility; a large packet containing letters (May-Aug. 1957) from F.H. Watts (Pres., SoWest Iron & Steel), T.A. Young (T.A. Young & Associates), Congressman Wilson, RAdm. A.G. Mumma (Chief of Bureau of Ships), & Catherine Parham (Secretary, Wilson’s office) re/ extensive corresp. on naval ship repair work in the San Diego area, competition with Naval Repair Facilities, & cost cutting trends; 1 Western Union telegram (9/5/57) from F.H. Watts & Wilson’s Admin. Asst., E.F. Terrar, Jr.’s, reply (9/30/57.) re/ “be assured that the Congressman, the Bureau of Ships, and the Department of Defense, are concerned with the impact of the reduced shipyard activity on the West Coast,” & the need to maintain an adequate level to meet requirements for mobilization in Navy Yards, & the private sector too; letters (1/31, 2/3, & 2/8/58) from F.H. Watts & Congressman Wilson re/ President Watts’ frustration with Wilson & the Navy as to opportunities for small ship repair contractors in San Diego & his “intentions to get out of Navy work entirely”—“three years ago there were about seven small boat contractors in San Diego doing business with the Navy. As of now there are only two left, one when we quit . . . . It seems that National Steel organization gets 100% cooperation when they ask. Could we possibly be backing the wrong party in Washington?”
