SAN DIEGO MISC. CITY ISSUES & PROBLEMS – 1961: A collection of letters, telegrams, memorandums, memos, newsletters, business publications & 1 map. Examples are: One letter (12/1/61) from constituent Mrs. Marilyn Gliebe & Congressman Wilson’s reply (12/11/61) re/ “San Diego is a nice town, but” small businesses are threatened because there are too many “huge Shopping Centers outside of the city and because of the big discount stores;” packet containing office notes, news clipping, letters & telegrams (11/61) from Congressman Wilson, Arthur Sylester (Asst. Sec. of Defense), El Cajon Mayor Karl Tuttle & constituent Mrs. R.C. Doherty re/ “cancellation of the U.S. Navy Band’s participation in the Mother Goose Parade” & Wilson’s attempts to get the Defense Dept. to reconsider; packet containing letters (June-Sept. 1961) from Congressman Wilson, Major General A.L. Bowser (Asst. Chief of Staff G-1, Commandant, USMC), S.D. City Police Chief A.E. Jansen, & constituent D. Mayor Charles C. Dail & Wilson’s response (5/21/61) re/ the Mayor’s “growing concern” over Congressional interest in HR 1148 & S581, which would restrict “the right of the States to impose use tax assessments” “from out-of-state vendors”—an estimated loss of $625,000 to the city; 1 copy of a letter (7/31/61) from Kenneth H. Golden & attached copies of S.D. Convention & Tourist Bureau, “News Release” – “San Diego-Land Called Ideal Tourist Mecca By World Travel Authority . . . Gunnar von Haartman” & “Tourist Bureau Arranges Full Program For World Travel Guest” from Helsinki, Finland; a small collection of letters (7/61) from Congressman Wilson, constituents Bjarne E. Ursin, James C. Haugh (V.P. & General Manager, S.D. Transit Co.), & J. Page Dowden & attached newsclipping re/ suggestions for the “establishment of a Foreign Tourist Bureau;” an article in the Fortune Magazine-- “How to Unclear Our Cities,” & “the problem of a San Diego-Coronado tube [or ferry] and the disposition of Camp Elliot;” copies of letters (May-June 1961) from Mr. & Mrs. Wilfred J. Howey (Ketchikan, Alaska), Congressman Wilson, & S.D. Muncipal Court Judge George C. Crawford re/ Wilson’s assistance to a Coast Guard couple concerning an arrest warrant and payment; a collection of letters (Ap. & June, 1961) from Congressman Wilson, constituent C. Penney, Hugh Mields, Jr. (Asst. Admin. for Congressional Affairs, H.H.F.A.), & Pat Hyndman (Pres., Kiwanis Club of San Diego) re/ complaints about graft in the juvenile detention system, a H.H.F.A. press release on the Imperial Beach municipal fishing & recreation pier’s federal assistance & the Kiwanis Club’s “Pillars of American Freedom” series; 1 copy of a letter (3/6/61) from S.D. Engineer E.F. Gabrielson re/ “crosstown Route ‘6’ bus zone on the easterly side of Rosecrans Street north of the Lytton Street” & resolving traffic problems in this area; 1 letter (2/15/61) from Max D. Berlin (Berlin Building Corp.) & Wilson’s reply (2/23/61) re/ Mr. Berlin’s encouragement for Wilson’s recent remarks before the S.D. Chamber of Commerce stressing the importance of the Navy & “a larger share of the military budget” for San Diego; copy of a 1 letter (11/14/60) from constituents Mrs. Opal Gawf & Mrs. Karsten Pettersen, Wilson’s reply (1/10/61) & attached news clipping—Rip Manning, “2000 Crowd Postal Annex for Yule Jobs,” Evening Tribune (11/14/60, a-3) re/ “unemployment situation in San Diego . . . . I believe President elect Kennedy will do something about the situation in time, in the meantime, what are these people going to do?” Wilson responded that he was “not optimistic about the legislation the President elect intended to push for relief of depressed areas,” since S.D.is only in the 6-8 percent unemployment category; 1 copy of the Students for Freedom, Evolve (Vol. 1, No,. 4 & 5, Jan.-Double Edition-Feb., 1961-- 26 pp.); 3 copies of Security First National Bank, Monthly Summary of Business Conditions in Southern California (Vol. 40, Nos. 1, 2, & 3, Jan., Feb, Mar. 1961); 5 copies of San Diego Chamber of Commerce, San Diego Business (Vol. 29, Nos. 8, 11, 12, 13, & 23— Ap., June, July, & Dec. 1961); 1 copy of a Chevron Gasoline, San Diego Street and Vicinity Maps, 1960.
