A collection of letters and telegrams. Examples are: One letter (11/3/55) from George W. Chapin (Mobil Dealer) & Congressman Wilson’s reply (11/7/55) re/ “Unfair competition—PXs and Fed-Mart sells gasoline below our cost;” Stapled copies of letters (Nov. 1955) from George J. Burger (V.P., National Federation of Independent Business) & Joseph D. Lunday (Chevron Standard Oil Products-Mission Blvd., S.D.) re/ unfair competition because “the Major Oil Companies have a dual pricing system . . . . We pay five to six cents a gallon more than Fed-Mart does delivered;” Small, stapled packet of corresp. (Nov.-Dec. 1955) from Congressman Wilson, John W. Gwyne (Chairman, FTC) & Joseph D. Lunday (Chevron Standard Oil Products) re/ problems of the Independent Service Station Operators competing for survival in the dual pricing policy for gasoline sales; 1 letter (11/22/55) from Donald C. Cartwright (Excutive Secretary, Retail Petroleum Dealers’ Assn. of S.D. County, Inc.) & Wilson’s reply (12/16/55) re/ “discount houses selling gasoline at prices substantially below that which most of the Members of your Organization are able to sell the product;” a large collection of Western Union telegrams (Oct.-Nov. 1955) complaining to Wilson that “Another Gas War imminent unless PXs and Fed-Mart discontinue selling below dealers cost;” copies of letters (Feb. 1956) from Congressman Wilson & RAdm. R. J. Arnold (Chief of Bureau, Bureau of Supplies and Accounts) re/ “Navy Exchange service stations are . . . completely self-sustaining with respect to operating expenses;” a stapled packet containing a memorandum, letters & telegrams (July – Aug. 1956) from Ed. Terrar, Jr. (Admin. Asst. to Wilson), Robert T. Secret (Acting Chairman, FTC), John R. Heim (Acting Secretary, FTC) & Andy Grayner (Pres., Independent Gasoline Dealers Assn., S.D.) re/ further analysis by FTC of the alleged “chaotic condition in the gasoline market in San Diego.”
