Scope and Contents
Twelve packets of corresp. concerning attempts to change military discharge records & as assisted by Congressman Wilson. Examples are: A small packet of letters (July 1964-Jan. 1965) from Chula Vista constituent Arlington Smith (Member Branch 61, Fleet Reserve Assoc.), Congressman Wilson, Cmdr. C.H. Klindworth (Special Asst. for Liaison and Technical Informatin, BuPers), Paul B. Fay, Jr. (UnderSecretary of the Navy), & Charles E. Curley (Ex.... Sec., Bd. For Correction of Naval Records, Dept. of the Navy) re/ retired Warrant Officer (W-1) Smith, through Wilson’s help, finally obtained a reclassification to W-2 & was entitled to “all monies lawfully found due . . . as a result of the foregoing correction of naval record;” a small packet of letters (May 1964-Dec. 1965) from San Diego constituent Alexander L. Hackett (QMC, U.S.N.), LCDR A.J. Klein (Congressional Liaison Div., Office of the Secretary of the Navy), Congressman Wilson, Charles E. Curley (Executive Secretary, Board For Corrections of Naval Records), & Margaret M. Young (Wilson’s Secretary) re/ the sad experience of Chief Hackett & his attempts to obtain a correction of a forced choice of receiving an undesireable discharge after 21 years of honorable service; a small packet containing letters (Feb. 1964–Feb. 1965) from Charles W. Stringer (Service Officer, North Island Service Post No. 753, American Legion), Congressman Wilson, LCDR A.J. Klein (Congressional Liaison Div., Office of the Secretary of the Navy), & Charles E. Curley (Executive Secretary, Board For Correction of Naval Records) re/ another sad story of an attempt to correct a Bad Conduct Discharge which had been received by a young enlisted man in 1938 who went on to serve in the Navy from 1943-1947 with honorable service. The Board rejected his application for the correction of the earlier received BCD; a packet containing letters (Nov. 1964-Feb. 1965) from La Mesa constituent Stanley Cannon (EN2, U.S. Coast Guard), Congressman Wilson, Margaret M. Young (Wilson’s Secretary), & Capt. W.L. Morrison (Congression Liaison Officer, U.S. Coast Guard) re/ Mr. Cannon’s attempts to reverse a Summary Court Martial which had reduced his rating from EN1 to EN2; a small packet containing 1 copy of “Application For Corrections of Military or Naval Records” (Form DD 149, 1/64), copies of letters (Jan. 1964-Ap. 1965) from Duane F. Teeter, J. Jonathan Taylor, Edward Bruckner, George B. Corn (Attorney at Law), Congressman Wilson, & Raymond J. Williams (Executive Secretary, Army Board For Corrections of Military Records) re/ an attempt by Mr. Teeter to correct a “Dishonorable Discharge” from Army service to a “General Discharge” failed; a packet of letters (Mar.-Ap. 1965) from CA Assemblyman E. Richard Barnes, San Diego constituent Ray H. Griffith, Congressman Wilson, Col. L. Conques (Chief, Congressional Inquiry Div., Office of Legislative Liaison, Dept. of the Air Force), & 1 copy of Assemblyman Barnes, Sacramento Report (1st general report, 1965 Legislative Session, 6 pp.) re/ Mr. Griffith’s attempt to rectify his unfavorable discharge from the Air Force was rejected by the Air Force Discharge Review Board; a small packet of letters (Jan.-May 1965) from Brig. General G.B.Simler (Commander, HQ., 4520th Combat Crew Training Wing (TAC), Nellis Air Force Base, NV.), Maurice O. Wamberg (Dist. 1 Commander, AMVETS), Congress-man Wilson, & Col. L. Conques (Chief, Congressional Inquiry Div., Office of Legislative Liaison, Dept. of the Air Force) re/ the AMVETS’ request for a review of an airman’s “Undesireable Discharge” is responded to with a requirement for the airman to complete Form DD 149 & contact the Air Force Review Board; a large packet of letters (Oct. 1964-May 1965) from Congressman Wilson, Margaret M. Young (Wilson’s Secretary), Major General J.C. Lambert (The Adjutant General, U.S. Army), El Cajon constituent & retired MSgt. William E. Rodgers, Raymond J. Williams (Executive Secretary, Army Board For Military Records), & Col. D.D. Spahr (Commanding, Office of the Adjutant General) re/ the final success of MSgt. Rodgers in obtaining credit for his service in the CA National Guard; a small packet of letters (Mar.-June 1965) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Louise Schwartz (formerly PFC Louise Annette Blaylock), Congressman Wilson, Lt. Col. G.W. Pickell (Chief of Legislative Liaison, HQ., Dept. of the Army), Brig. General L.H. Walker, Jr. (Acting The Adjutant General, U.S. Army), & Major General J.C. Lambert (The Adjutant General, U.S. Army) re/ an attempt to alter former PFC Blaylock’s “General under Honorable” conditions discharge to “Honorable Discharge” was denied by the Army Discharge Review Bd.; a small collection of letters (May-July 1965) from QM3/c Robert C. Crawford (USS Somers, DD 947), Congressman Wilson, LCDR A.J. Klein (Congressional Liaison Div. Office of the Secretary of the Navy), Lt. J.A. Hendry (Special Inquiries, Enlisted Personnel Div., BuPers), & Cmdr. A.A. Morel, Jr. (Head, Performance Evaluation Branch, Enlisted Performance Div., BuPers) re/ a rather complicated scenario of a 14 year naval service person whose activities resulted in rate reduction & fines for which he was not able to have corrected by the Bd. For Corrections of Naval Records. Extensive personal info. on Mr. Crawford from BuPers is in their 7/14/65 letter; a large packet containing letters (June 1963-Aug. 1965) from Col. D.D. Spahr (Commanding, HQ., Office of the Adjutant General, U.S. Army), Capt. Thomas L. Zane (Commanding, Co. D, 508the Military Police BN, APO 407, U.S. Forces), San Diego constituent Joseph G. Sonka (SP4, Co. B, 508th MP BN), Lt. Col. Louis O. Giuffrida (Commanding, 508th MP BN), Congressman Wilson, Raymond J. Williams (Executive Secretary, Army Board for Correction of Military Records), & Major General J.C. Lambert (The Adjutant General, U.S. Army) re/ extensive corresp. indicating Joseph Sonka’s many efforts to have “his military records to show that his reduction in grade was, and is, void;” a small packet containing letters (Feb. 1964-July 1965) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Bernice Tilton, Congressman Wilson, Lt. Col. Richard M. Hunt-USMC (Congressional Liaison Div., Office of the Secretary of the Navy), “Memo for the Record From Maggie,” office notes, Margaret M. Young (Wilson’s secretary), Col. Cliff Akinson, Jr. ( Asst. Dir. of Personnel, USMC), Frank C. Owen (Attorney at Law), & W. Lillienfeld (Acting Head, Records Branch, By direction of the Commander of the Marine Corps) re/ a complicated story of a young man whose conduct in the Marine Corps led to a series of courts martial & brig time & his attempts, through his attorney, to have his BCD corrected.
