Scope and Contents

A collection of official notices, letters, CA Senate and Assembly Joint Resolutions, statements, CA government publication and a Resolution: these are filed from January to October. Examples are: a “Roster of Public Officials” prepared by the Governmental Affairs Dept., Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, dated January 26, 1959; a 52 page copy of Organization of the Executive Branch of State Government, February, 1958, letters (Feb.) re/ constituent Mrs. Carrie Mae Fisher’s long personal letter was forwarded to CA State Senator Hugo Fisher to help resolve her problems; letters (Feb.) re/ Imperial Beach constituent Mrs. F. I. Wilbourn, “relative to an apparent Governor’s directive to remove the Cadet Corps from California Schools;” letters and news clipping (Feb.-Mar.) re/ “The Bonelli pension problem;” letters (Feb.) re/ more related to the criticism of William Bonelli affair and pension issue; letters (Mar.) re/ support for H. R. 1181 and a threat on a state level of removing Veterans Exemptions; letters (Feb.-Mar.) re/ commentaries from Grossmont High School in support of keeping the CA Cadet Corps Program in public schools and rejecting Governor Brown’s budget to delete funds for the Corps; letters (Mar.) re/ Wilson reminds constituent that the legislation she was concerned about was pending before the California State Legislature and not within his jurisdiction; 2 letters (3/26) from Wilson re/ problems with Patton State Hospital and Moose Lake State Hospital; letters (3/24 & 3/31/59) re/ Wilson receives “Senate Joint Resolution No. 11 relative to federal highway legislation;” letters (Apr.-May) re/ a reminder to constituent John J. Maloney that his problem is one involving the State and not in Wilson’s jurisdiction; letters (Apr.-May) re/ Wilson responds to S.D. constituent John J. Maloney, recently moved from Utica, N.Y., and unemployment problems; letters (Apr.-May) re/ the Chief Clerk of the CA Assembly sent “enclosed copies Assembly Joint Resolutions Nos. 22, 24 and 28” concerning adequate inspection of nuclear explosions, enact S. 910 of the 85th Congress & investigation of unnecessary sonic booms; letters (4/30 & 5/11) & copy of “History of the Mental Health Movement Compiled by Mrs. Lee Laird and her Committee on Mental Health, CA Chapter, Pro America” – this is a right-wing alarmist condemnation of the subject and La Jolla constituent Mrs. Ruth E. Dunlap this to Wilson in preparation for speech he was to give in San Diego – she was also concerned about the CA Short-Doyle Act. These are all state matters, Wilson responded and he refused to comment on them; letters (4/29 & 5/11) re/ S.D. constituent Mrs. Lawrence E. Rickey’s comments about the Short-Doyle Act pending before the State Legislature, “make no favorable comment on it at the Central Republican Club meeting;” letters (5/5 & 5/12) and an enclosed “copy of Senate Joint Resolution No. 15, relative to the assignment of the construction of fleet ballistic missile submarines;” letters (5/12 & 5/27) re/ Chula Vista constituent Willard L. Smith and his problem with the California State Labor Commission – Wilson suggested he contact in State Assemblyman and Senator; letters (4/21, 5/19 & 5/29) re/ the problems of S.D. constituent Georg Maurogon not being approved for Old Age Security until December 1959; 1959; letters (6/3 & 6/8) & a copy of Senate Joint Resolution No. 23 “Relating to Chambers Lodge Post Office:” – an historic site on Lake Tahoe; letters (5/6 & 5/7) re/ student Linda Lee Grady’s “very nice letter advising me of the studies you are making in summer school” - Linda’s 2 page letter is an excellent example of suggestions from high school students about the need for Driver Education classes, license reform, automobile and highway safety and other concepts; letters (June-July) re/ personal issues, politics & Moleno Smith’s interest in obtaining a real estate broker license; letters (8/1 & 8/12) re/ Bert Beck, his wife and young daughter - emigrants from Holland” are not finding the economic opportunities in San Diego they expected. Beck working over 60 hours a week in a managerial capacity for the Theatrical Enterprises Corporation at the Broadway and Spreckles [sic] theaters and managing others, he considered he was being taken advantage of an emigrant – “I consider this ‘SLAVE LABOR’.” Wilson suggested that this was a California problem and he should contact the local State Dept. of Employment; letters (7/30 & 8/12) & attached copies of 21 resolutions adopted by the Western Assoc. of State Game and Fish Commissioners at their 39th Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon in July: letters (8/11 & 8/18) re/ Chula Vista constituent Mrs. Adele McLaughlin’s complaint about the S.D. Board of Education’s placing limits on physical education classes, such as curtailing hours, etc. She mentions President Kennedy’s speeches about the need for better health. Wilson reminded her that this was a state and local problem and to contact Senator Jack Schrade; letters (9/28 & 10/7) re/ constituents Mr. & Mrs. Donald M. Bardsley suggest Federal traffic laws to help motorists, but Wilson is worried about cutting “across traditional states rights” & suggests a voluntary approach on a state by state basis.
